BY SARGUN SETHI

On October 9, the world lost a legend. Ratan Tata, at the age of 86, passed away, marking the end of an era for the Tata Group and the global business landscape he profoundly influenced. His vision and leadership not only transformed a company but also inspired countless individuals and industries worldwide. Under his leadership, the Tata empire grew into a global force, yet his heart always leaned towards giving back. More than a business magnate, Tata championed social good, blending success with compassion. His journey is one of integrity, innovation, and service, demonstrating how business success can go hand in hand with making a positive social impact. As we reflect on his extraordinary legacy, we are reminded of the indelible mark he has left on both the corporate world and society, and the lasting inspiration he provides for future generations of leaders.

Born in 1937, Ratan came from a family with a rich legacy in business—his father was Naval Tata, and his grandfather was Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group. After studying architecture at Cornell, he returned to India in 1962, ready to make a difference. Starting right on the shop floor at Tata Steel, he gained valuable experience that shaped his leadership style. Those early experiences played a significant role in his later approach to leadership. Over the years, he assumed various roles within Tata companies, notably at Tata Motors, where he truly made his mark. One of his key achievements was turning around the National Radio & Electronics Company.

In 1991, Ratan Tata stepped up as chairman of Tata Sons at a pivotal moment when India was opening up its economy. This was truly a game-changer! Under his leadership, the Tata Group made bold moves, acquiring international brands like Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley. However, what truly set Ratan apart was his focus beyond mere profits. How can businesses today learn from his emphasis on ethics and social responsibility? He fostered a culture deeply rooted in values, demonstrating that a company can be a global leader while remaining true to its principles.

But Ratan Tata was far more than a business titan. His legacy extends deeply into the lives he touched through his philanthropic work with the Tata Trusts. From championing education and healthcare to uplifting rural communities, Tata believed that businesses have a duty to give back to society. His vision wasn’t just about profits, it was about purpose. He sought to create lasting, meaningful change, and in doing so, he inspired a generation of entrepreneurs, both in India and globally, to look beyond the bottom line and consider their impact on the world around them.

Ratan Tata’s legacy is one of compassion and visionary leadership. He didn’t just drive the success of the Tata Group; he actively contributed to the nation’s progress as a whole. Reflecting on his life and achievements, it’s evident that his influence will inspire future generations. Tata showed the world that business, when led with purpose, can be a powerful force for good.
